Office Lobby Signs: Types, Materials, and Lead Times

A lobby sign is the logo on the wall behind your reception desk. It is the first thing most visitors read once they are inside your building, and unlike a hallway sign or a suite number, people look at it directly while they wait.

This guide covers what office lobby signs are made from, how they attach to the wall, what installation costs, and how long they take to build. Every figure below is Houston Sign Company’s own published lead time or price range.

What an Office Lobby Sign Is

An office lobby sign puts your company name, logo or slogan on the reception wall. It can be a single printed panel, a set of separate dimensional letters, or a mounted plaque.

We make them in acrylic — clear, frosted or colored — and in brushed aluminum with laser-cut lettering, mounted on standoffs or with adhesive. We design, fabricate and install them in-house at our shop on Chimney Rock Road, and we have made signs in Houston since opening downtown in 1946.

Five Types of Office Lobby Signs

You can put your name, logo or slogan on the wall in several ways. These five cover most Houston lobbies.

1. Acrylic Lobby Signs

Acrylic is a colorless, transparent polymer. Tints are added to the sheet during production, and frosted finishes are applied during customization. Most of our acrylic is 3mm, about one eighth of an inch, and we can quote a custom thickness if your design needs one.

We print directly onto the sheet, or overlay vinyl coating or cut letters when you want dimension on the face. See custom acrylic signs for the full range of finishes.

2. Brushed Aluminum and Metal Letters

Metal is routed to match your artwork, so a signature logo or a specific typeface comes out exactly as drawn rather than approximated. Brushed aluminum with laser-cut lettering is the usual choice when the lobby needs to match a wider brand standard across floors or buildings.

3. Dimensional Letters on Standoffs

Acrylic and metal letters can both be held off the wall rather than laid flat against it. The gap lets the letters cast a shadow, which separates the logo from the paint behind it. Our on-site laser engraving in Houston can add engraved detail to the same letters.

4. Lobby Plaques

A plaque is one unit rather than separate letters. They are acrylic, metal, or the two combined, and they mount full-size to the lobby wall. A plaque is the simpler install of the two, because there is one piece to level instead of a dozen.

5. Lobby Door and Directional Signs

If your lobby is the hub for several departments, the signs that send people to the right one belong in the same family as the logo wall. These interior directional signs use the same materials and finishes, so the set reads as one system rather than four separate purchases.

How a Lobby Sign Attaches to the Wall

Three mounting methods cover most lobby work, and which one you get depends on the weight of the sign and the wall behind it.

Spacers are the common choice for large acrylic lobby signs. Depending on the weight, a rectangular panel of thick acrylic may need only one spacer in each of the four corners.

Wall clamps suit placards and room labels. They hold the sign slightly off the wall and add a black or brushed stainless highlight — the clamp itself is usually aluminum.

Drilled holes work on smooth surfaces. You can specify where the holes go so the fixings land clear of your artwork.

One Houston-specific note: local humidity and hard-running air conditioning can loosen adhesives and warp some substrates. We factor that into the material recommendation rather than treating an adhesive mount as a default.

Lead time splits cleanly by how the sign is made. Simple printed and foam board signs can be ready in two to three business days. Dimensional acrylic, metal and engraved signs typically take seven to ten business days, because the letters are cut, finished and then installed as a separate visit.

On price, size and complexity drive most of it. Small wall-mounted signs are often under $200. Dimensional letter installation commonly runs $200 to $800, depending on the size of the letters, how intricate the design is, and how easy the wall is to reach. Budget roughly 10–15% of the initial sign cost for ongoing maintenance. Our full breakdown is in how much custom indoor signage in Houston costs in 2026.

Where ADA Rules Apply in a Lobby

Under section 216.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, signs that identify permanent rooms and spaces — restrooms, room numbers, exit stairs — need raised characters duplicated in Braille.

Which signs in your building fall under that depends on your floor layout and the age of the building, so we check it as part of the quote rather than assuming. If you are ordering a logo wall, it is worth pricing the ADA signs on the same floor at the same time, so the whole set matches.

If You Open Before the Sign Is Ready

Dimensional acrylic and metal take seven to ten business days. Move-in dates and opening dates rarely wait for that, and a lobby with bare drywall behind the desk is a poor first week.

Coroplast yard signs cover the gap outside the building while the permanent sign is fabricated. They are corrugated plastic, lightweight, printed in full color, and they hold up to Houston wind, rain and sun. Use them at the driveway and the entrance to point people to a suite that has no sign on the wall yet, then pull them once the lobby sign is installed.

Your lobby sign takes seven to ten business days. Printed signs from our store can be at your entrance before then.
