Twenty to twenty-three inch characters is a useful number to hold onto, because it is roughly the height of a 24 x 18 printed sign turned on its side. The catch is the one you would expect. Letters take longer to set up. They take longer to store. And they are the wrong tool entirely if the message includes a face.

Which yard sign size fits a lawn announcement?

For a message read from the sidewalk, 18 x 12 inches is enough. For a message read from a passing car, go to 24 x 18 inches or larger.

Square cut gives you a rectangle. Contour cut trims the panel to a custom outline, which is the difference between a sign that says “Congrats Grad” and a sign shaped like a graduation cap.

Start with the weather. Now the material. Inteplast Group, a major North American manufacturer of corrugated polypropylene board, publishes a water absorption figure of 0.03% after 24 hours of full immersion, along with a melting temperature near 165 degrees Celsius, roughly 329 degrees Fahrenheit (IntePro technical properties, June 2026).

Read those together and the picture is clear. Houston rain does not soak into the panel. Houston heat does not come within two hundred degrees of melting the resin. What actually takes lawn signs down here is wind against an under-staked position, not the material giving up. Inteplast lists 4 mm board at 154 pounds per thousand square feet, which works out to roughly 2.5 ounces per square foot, so an 18 x 12 panel weighs somewhere near four ounces. Light enough to matter in a gust.

There is a real limit, and it is measured in months rather than hours. Inteplast tested its ultra outdoor weather resistant grade in a weatherometer to SAE J1960 for 2,500 hours without brittleness, which it equates to one year in Miami, and it recommends switching to polyethylene board for exposure beyond a year. A lawn announcement lives on the grass for a week or two. You are nowhere near that ceiling.

How many wire stakes do you need, and where do they go?

Two stakes per sign is the working minimum for anything 18 x 12 or larger, and a 48 x 48 panel needs more.

Statutory protection does exist, but it is aimed elsewhere: at flags, religious items, solar devices, and political signs during election season. A congratulations display for your kid falls outside all of it.

The practical move takes ten minutes. Pull your CC&Rs and search for the word “sign.” Check for a size cap and a duration limit before you order a 48 x 48 panel. Most associations that regulate this at all still permit a modest display for a short window, which is exactly what a birthday or graduation sign is.
